This front garden in Summertown, Oxford, was redesigned to create a tidy, low-maintenance entrance with a strong formal character. A light stone path and steps edged with dark setts lead to the front door, while pale gravel and clipped evergreen planting keep the layout simple and structured.

The Design

The entrance path and steps use pale paving framed by dark setts, creating a crisp border and a clear route to the front door. The strong contrast gives the small space definition without making it feel over-designed.

The adjoining garden area is finished with pale gravel for easy maintenance. A clipped circular hedge around the existing tree provides a simple focal point and introduces evergreen structure.

The Result

The completed front garden feels orderly, welcoming and appropriate to the property. Its restrained material palette keeps maintenance low while retaining enough planting to prevent the space from feeling hard or bare.
