RHS Silver Medal Japanese Garden at Hampton Court

In 2016, Kew Green constructed the Japanese Summer Garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, working from a design by Saori Imoto of Studio Lasso. Inspired by traditional Japanese hydrangea temple gardens, the finished garden was awarded an RHS Silver Medal.
Designing the RHS Hampton Court Japanese Garden
The garden drew inspiration from traditional Japanese hydrangea temple gardens. Bamboo, moss and vivid blue hydrangeas created a calm, richly textured setting, while the winding gravel path and stepping stones guided visitors through the space.
Bamboo, Hydrangeas and Contrasting Textures
The upright bamboo, soft moss and vivid hydrangeas created strong contrasts in colour, form and texture. Areas of light and shade added depth, reinforcing the simplicity and asymmetry associated with Japanese garden design.
Traditional Craftsmanship and Framed Views
Bamboo screens and carefully positioned planting partially concealed areas of the garden, encouraging visitors to pause and look beyond them. These framed and changing views brought a sense of discovery to the journey through the space.
