This steeply sloping garden in Ladder Hill, Wheatley, was redesigned to create a contemporary outdoor space for a young family. Pale stone steps and large rendered planting beds lead through the different levels to a generous terrace centred around an outdoor fireplace.

The Build

A series of stepped walkways makes the slope easier to navigate and turns the level changes into a deliberate part of the design. The crisp rendered beds frame each route and create smaller, sheltered areas before the garden opens onto the main terrace.

The Fireplace Terrace

The principal seating area extends from the house and pool room. Its outdoor fireplace combines a stainless-steel surround with oyster stacking stone, creating a strong focal point for the paved terrace and surrounding seating.

The Planting

Planting within the raised beds softens the rendered walls and introduces colour and texture along the stepped routes. The mix was also chosen to attract insects and other wildlife, adding interest for the whole family.

The Result

The finished garden turns a difficult slope into a series of connected, practical spaces. Stepped routes provide clear movement between the levels, while generous entertaining areas and open countryside views give the family different ways to enjoy the garden throughout the year.
